Hetty de Wette is a Dutch landscape painter, situated on the island of Schouwen-Duiveland in Zeeland, the Netherlands. She grew up in Austin, Texas. She lives with her husband and two children in a hundred year old cottage near the sea. | ![]() |
Hetty de Wette captures light for a living. For 15 years she has lived and worked on a North Sea island in the south of Holland. "Many artists paint from photographs", she says, "But the impressionists were fascinated with how real light hits the eye in a given moment." She walks the beaches, the dunes and dikes of her island, easel and canvas strapped to a backpacking frame, painting in one place then moving to another as the light changes. "Island light is special", it is 'lighter' light, more diffused. They call it "Zeeuws licht". |
